Old Remedies

  • Sore throat - add 1 teaspoon salt to lukewarm water and use as gargle.
  • Diarrhoea and dehydration - add 1 teaspoon salt and 8 teaspoons sugar to 1 litre water. Drink 1 glass full hourly.
  • Sprains and bruises - Mix salt and apple-cider to form a coarse, damp mixture. Place on soft cloth (preferably white as it may give off colour) and place on injured area.
  • Use salt instead of toothpaste to polish teeth. This keeps the breath fresh and bring relief to sore gums.
  • Acne 1 - dissolve 1 teaspoon salt in a little vinegar, rub onto face (avoid eyes) en leave on for 20 minutes. Rinse off with lukewarm water.
  • Acne 2 - dissolve 1 teaspoon salt in a little lemon juice. Leave on skin for up to 20 minutes then rinse off with lukewarm water.
  • Acne 3 - mix together some salt and olive oil. Use mixture to scrub face. This removes dried skin and softens the skin.
  • Runny nose - dissolve 1 tablespoon salt in two cups of water and use as a nasal inhaler.
  • Weak nails - mix together 2 teaspoons salt and 2 teaspoons olive oil. Rub into nails twice daily and leave on for 3-5 minutes at a time. Polish using a soft cloth or cotton wool.
  • Tired and sore muscles - add 2 handsfull coarse salt to a warm bath and soak for 20 minutes. The salt also softens the skin and removes any smells and parasites.
  • To stop smoking - every time you feel the urge to smoke, lick a little bit of salt with the tip of your tongue.
  • Use a little salt water to rinse out a sore eye.
